Time-Bounded Persistent Goals and their Role in Discourse

چکیده

Cohen and Levesque have developed a theory of rational action that can be used to guide the actions of an intelligent agent. A fundamental building block of Cohen and Levesque's theory is their notion of a persistent goal. In this paper, we extend persistent goals by recasting them in terms of add/drop conditions, and introducing time intervals. These two extensions are then used to deene time-bounded persistent goals, which are useful for modelling the kinds of goals that arise in discourse. In particular, we illustrate how time-bounded persistent goals can be used to initiate discourse interruptions motivated by inconsistencies and plan ambiguities. We use examples to demonstrate the forms of dialogs which can be accounted for in terms of these goals. Finally, we discuss the potential for employing time-bounded persistent goals to manage the turn taking activity of intelligent agents, comparing with other work on turn taking in goal-oriented dialogs. Our commentary on Forman et al paper explores their thesis that right to health language can frame global health policy responses. We examined human rights discourse in the outcome documents from three 2015 United Nations (UN) summits and found rights-related terms are used in all three. However, a deeper examination of the discourse finds the documents do not convey the obligations and entitle...

MANAGING PERSISTENT DISCOURSE Organizational Goals and Digital Texts

Prior to digital communications media, texts were primarily judged using hidden but assumed institutional practices (e.g., journal peer review processes, editorial mediation). Increasingly, digital communications media can make these previously invisible discursive practices visible in a persistent medium. Doing so transforms these discourses into texts where they are subject to: (1) a reader's...

Health Rights and Realization; Comment on “Rights Language in the Sustainable Development Agenda: Has Right to Health Discourse and Norms Shaped Health Goals?”

In their hypothesis published in IJHPM, Lisa Forman and colleagues examined the prominence of the right to health and sexual and reproductive health rights (as well as related language) in four of the key reports that fed into the process of negotiating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Now that the SDGs have been formally adopted, this comment builds on some of the insights of Forman a...
